2   Q:

How long does it take for a submission to be listed?

A: This depends on the number of submissions in the category waiting to be reviewed. Some may be done in a few days, others may take up to a few weeks. Please do not re-submit your site for at least 3 weeks after submission.

Many search engines use Open Directory data, however their update frequencies vary from every few weeks to every few months. Sites accepted in the ODP might NOT be listed by them for several months. The ODP has no control over this.

3   Q:

Why wasn't my site included?

A: The Open Directory Project is very eclectic and only selects what we feel are the best of the submissions we receive. If your site is not included, please don't take it personally.

Some of the more basic reasons why a site is rejected are:

The site is still under construction.

Please only submit sites that are complete. Sites with "Under Construction" and "Coming Soon" are a big turn-off and will be immediately rejected.

The submitter did not follow the submission guidelines.

Before submitting, please be sure to read the ODP Submission Guidelines.

The site does not function.

If the site has too many broken graphics, dead links, or is poorly put together so that it is very hard to read or use, it most likely will be rejected. Likewise for going off the other end of the scale with flashy jumping graphics and little else. And of course, numerous submissions simply turn up a 404 (Page Does Not Exist) error message.

Scant content.

Self-explanatory. The best sites are more than just a great Flash intro, or page after page of self-aggrandizing, or rants against other sites, you get the idea. Pages with useful info and originality are the most desirable qualities. Self-explanatory. The best sites are more than just a great Flash intro, or page after page of self-aggrandizing, or rants against other clans, you get the idea. Pages with useful info for clan as well as non-clan members, insights into the game, Half Life and TFC news, tips, downloads, clan philosophies, and originality are the most desirable qualities.

Adult content

Sites with porn or adult content will not be listed here. They should be submitted in the proper subcategory under Adult.

Too many banner ads or pop-ups.

This is perhaps the worst of all and will get a submission killed faster than anything.

4   Q:

Uh, that's not the URL I submitted.......

A: The ODP does not list redirection or vanity urls. (And the ODP gets hundreds of submissions a day, and yes, we are familiar with them all). So if you have a page on Tripod and submit a site with a url such as http://come.to/mysite we will list the Tripod url.

5   Q:

Could you please spell the title as we do?

A: The ODP does not list sites using unusual capitalizations or punctuation, nor do we list expletives. So a submissions like:

"(=====> SuPeRDooPeR SiTe <=====)"

would be listed as "Superdooper Site".

6   Q:

Hey, you changed my description!

A: ...And if we had a dime for every submission that went, "We're the Number One site..." or "We're the BEST...". Descriptions are just that - descriptions, not advertisements. Superlatives, hype and sales pitches will not be included. Keep it brief and concise - what the site is about, and what you offer.
