Bali is divided into nine districts, eight kabupatens or regencies (Badung, Gianyar, Bangli, Klungkung, Karangasem, Buleleng, Jembrana, and Tabanan) and the municipality of Denpasar.

The breakdown in government within the districts is as follows:

Kabupaten (Districts or regencies) (headed by an elected official called a bupati)
----Kecamatan (subdistricts) (headed by a camat)
--------Desas (villages) (headed by a perbekel)
------------Banjars (subvillages)


Badung

Badung Regency is located in the middle-south of Bali, encompassing the central uplands up past but not including the municipality of Denpasar and extending south to the Nusa Dua Peninsula (Bukit Badung).

It covers approximately 418 square kilometers and is home to approximately 300,000 people. It consists of four districts (Mengwi, Kuta, Petang and Abiansemal) which are then divided into 7 subdistricts (kecamatan), 33 Administrative villages (desa dinas), 297 smaller administrative villages (dusun), 119 neighbourhoods, 118 traditional villages (desa adat), and 498 smaller traditional villages (banjar).

Denpasar

The municipality of Denpasar covers the sprawling capital city of Denpasar, nestled amid the Badung regency. It has approximately 400,000 residents.
