Bangalore Rural

This rural district surrounds the city of Bangalore, which is a distinct district.

Belgaum

This district is named after the city of Belgaum. Situated on a plateau in the north-west corner of the state, Belgaum was a regional capital in the 12th and 13th centuries.

Bellari

Bellary district is spread from south-west to north-east and is situated on the eastern side of Karnataka State. The district is situated between 14° 30’ and 15°50’ north latitude and 75°40’ and 77°11’ east longitude. This district is bounded by Raichur district on the north by Dharwad district on the west, Chitradurga and Davangere districts on the south and Anantapur, Kurnool districts of Andhra Pradesh on east.

Bellary district takes its name from the word Balari that refers to goddess Durugamma as this goddess had manifested herself in the town.

Bidar

Bidar district, the northernmost district of Karnataka, is named after Bidar city.

Bijapur

This district is named after the city of Bijapur. The foundation of the historic city of Bijapur was laid during the reign of the Chalukayan Dynasty of Kalyani between 10th and 11th Centuries. They called it 'Vijayapura' or the city of Victory from hence comes its present name Bijapur.

Chamrajnagar

This is the southernmost district of Karnataka.

Chikmagalur

Chikmagalur is situated in South Western Part of Karnataka. This hilly district has some exciting trekking routes in the Western Ghats.

Chitradurga

This category lists web sites relating to Chitradurga district. Chitradurga is surrounded with bold rocky hills and picturesque valleys with huge towering boulders in unimaginable shapes. A unique haven for tourists, this place is also known as the 'Place of Stones' (Kallina Kote). The landscape resembles a mischievous giant's playground with boulders thrown around forming awesome silhouettes against the sky.

Dakshina Kannada

Dakshina Kannada is sometimes also known as South Canara, South Kanara.

Davanagere

In the late 18th century, Haidar Ali, ruler of Karnataka (Mysore), gave Davangere to the Maratha leader Apoji Ram, who encouraged merchants to settle there. "Davangere" is derived from "Deva Nagari", meaning divine city.

Davangere became a district on August 15 1997. This new district comprises of 6 taluks. Davangere, Harihar and Jagalur taluks have been taken from Chitradurga district, Harapanahalli from Bellary district while Chennagiri and Honnali were taken from Shimoga district.

Dharwada

The District of Dharwada is strategically located in Northern Karnataka, with industrial city of Hubli. Dharwada was recently divided into two more districts, Gadag and Haveri.

Gulbarga

Gulbarga is an important Divisional Head Quarter in Karnataka state. This district is situated between 76°04'and 77°42 Eastern Longitude, 16°12'and 17°46' North Latitude.

Hassan

Lying between 12°13' and 13°33' North latitudes and 75°33' and 76°38' East longitude, Hassan district has a total area of 6826.15 Sq. Kms. The greatest length of the district, from south to north, is about 129 kilometers, and its greatest breadth, from east to west, is about 116 kilometers.

Haveri

Haveri district is in interior central Karnataka, and is named after the town.

Kodagu

Kodagu district is located in the southwest of Karnataka, in the southermost portion of the Western Ghats in the state.

Kolar

Kolar district lies in the southeast of Karnataka state, to the east of Tumkur and Bangalore Rural districts.

Koppal

Koppal district, in northern interior Karnataka, is named after the town.

Mysore

Situated in the southern part of the Deccan Plateau, Mysore District is an undulating tableland, covered in parts by granite outcrops and fringed by verdant forests. From ancient times, this district has played a significant role in the history of South India. Mysore District is a popular tourist destination, offering several attractions ranging from the royal splendour of Mysore City and its fabulous Dasara Festival to the exquisite temples, pilgrimage centres and scenic spots.

Raichur

Raichur district is located in the north-western part of Karnataka. Historically alluded to as the 'Do-aab' meaning 'two rivers,' this district is ensconced between the Krishna on the North and the Tungabhadra on the South.

Shimoga

Shimoga, almost central on the Karnataka map is the rice bowl of the State. The rivers Tungabhadra, Sharavathi, Varada and Kumudavathi irrigate the luxuriant greens of the region. Shimoga was ruled by the great Indian dynasties of the Kadambas, Gangas, Chalukyas, Rastrakutas, Keladi and Vijaynagar Kings. Shimoga (Face of Shiva) was established by the Keladi rulers. It reached its pinnacle during the rule of Shivappa Nayaka around 1600 A.D.

Tumkur

This district is named after the town of Tumkur. Tumkur is a health resort in the Devarayadurga Hills.

Udupi

This district is named after the town of Udupi. The Vaishnavite town of Udupi is 58km north of Mangalore on the coastal road. It was here that the 13th century religious leader Madhavacharya, lived and preached. The Krishna temple in the town attracts thousands of pilgrims.

Uttara Kannada

Uttara Kannada is sometimes called North Canara, North Kanara.
