Metadata is "data about data" which allows computers to process information more effectively. It is similar to how a card in a card catalog would help you find a book in the library (if you can remember those days).

Dublin Core

The Dublin Core (named for Dublin, Ohio, where the first workshop in the effort was held) has established suggestions for metadata about online resources.

FGDC

The Federal Geographic Data Committee approved the Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata (FGDC-STD-001-1998) in June 1998.

MARC

MAchine Readable Cataloging record. The format used by the majority of catalog systems.

RDF

The Resource Description Framework (RDF) integrates a variety of applications from library catalogs and world-wide directories to syndication and aggregation of news, software, and content to personal collections of music, photos, and events using XML as an interchange syntax. The RDF specifications provide a lightweight ontology system to support the exchange of knowledge on the Web.
