    Lakeland College

Lakeland traces its beginnings to German immigrants who, fleeing from religious controversy in Europe, traveled to North America and eventually to the Sheboygan area where they settled in 1847. Even as they struggled for food and shelter, these pioneers thought in terms of higher education for their children.

In 1862, they built Missionshaus (Mission House), a combined academy-college-seminary. The school provided training in the liberal arts followed by a traditional seminary curriculum, as most of the early students were destined to become ministers. As the needs of its students changed, Mission House gradually broadened its purpose. By the end of the century, enrollment was no longer limited to pre-theological students and the college had developed strong programs of study in a wider number of disciplines.

A talented, scholarly faculty set high standards for the college early in its existence; standards which have been maintained to this day. Known simply as Mission House for 95 years, the college adopted the name Lakeland in 1956 and the seminary moved to Minneapolis/St. Paul in l962 to become United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities. The era of Mission House had ended, but Lakeland became heir to its campus, tradition and educational mission.

    Maranatha Baptist Bible College

Thirty-one years have passed since that day when Maranatha Baptist Bible College began. During this time over 2300 young people have walked the graduation procession across the campus, down the aisles and across the platform to receive justly earned degrees in several fields. These are now serving the Lord in some 20 foreign countries, 10 provinces and protectorates, and in almost every state of the Union. As pastors, evangelists, missionaries, church workers, teachers in Christian Day Schools, colleges, seminaries and Bible Institutes, they have served the Lord sacrificially and gladly. Only eternity will reveal the countless blessings these servants have brought to needy souls.

When the Cedarholms first began Maranatha, they placed in the college safe a sealed envelope containing the name of one who might assume the presidency of the college when they became incapacitated or the Lord would took them home to be with Him. That name was not revealed until 1977. Dr. Arno Q. Weniger, Jr., that man, was then made aware of the fact that he was that chosen one. He thanked the Cedarholms but said that he was very happy in his pastorate (Calvary Baptist Church, Normal, Illinois) and that he planned to stay right there. Dr. Cedarholm told him that he believed that he was God's choice for the position and that he would wait for him until he was ready to come to Maranatha.

In 1982 in the providence of the Lord, Dr. Weniger indicated his readiness and willingness to take up the new role as the president of Maranatha Baptist Bible College. His ministry was blessed of the Lord for fifteen years. In Maranatha's thirtieth year, Dr. Dave Jaspers, a 1976 graduate of the college, became its third president.

    Northland College

Northland is an environmental liberal arts college located on the south shore of Lake Superior in Ashland, Wisconsin. What is an environmental liberal arts college? Northlanders major in biology and water science, meteorology and English, environmental studies and sociology, outdoor education and mathematics. They dream of corporate boardrooms, graduate school, life in the wilds of Alaska, or a career as a politician. Our investment in both discovery and tolerance invites the intellectually energetic and the individualistic to our four-year coeducational institution.

If you come to Northland, you will begin to find out what an environmental liberal arts college is as soon as you are introduced to the north woods and Lake Superior. You will discover the diverse and abundant natural resources of the region as you plan your own trips to nearby forests and lakes, or go on field trips in your classes.

Northland is, at its heart, a liberal arts college, so classes focus on what you would expect in a traditional curriculum. In English, Shakespeare is still Shakespeare - the timeless and magnificently insightful illustrator of the human condition - but there are also classes like "Writing the Environmental Essay" or "Humanity and Nature in Literature," which develop traditional knowledge and skills by focusing on the natural world. Business Economics offers courses in accounting, marketing, and management, but also teaches "Economics of Sustainable Development." Even if you major in mathematics and do not elect to take classes with an environmental focus, you will encounter the natural world in your studies.

We work to protect the environment as well. Northland students joined architects and the planning team to select environmentally-friendly materials in 40 categories for our newest residence hall, the Environmental Living & Learning Center. With sustainable features like a 120-foot wind tower, passive and active solar collection, solar hot water panels, and two greenhouses, the facility has room for 114 students.

Northland doesn't require a specific level of environmental participation (except recycling), but it does provide opportunities in both practical and aesthetic ways. Practically, students can choose to get involved in classes, organizations, or projects which focus on the environment. Aesthetically, the breathtaking beauty of Lake Superior and her shoreline of beaches and cliffs, the clean air and clear skies, and the forests and their inhabitants are available to everyone. If you're lucky, you can also tip your head back and watch the Northern Lights dancing in the night sky.
