OBU was founded in 1906 when the Baptists of Oklahoma Territory, realizing the great need for a Christian emphasis among institutions of higher learning, appointed a commission to make plans for the founding of a Baptist University. A board of trustees was elected in 1907, and in 1910 the school was granted articles of incorporation.
