The origins of Azusa Pacific University date back to 1899, when a group of spiritual leaders from various denominations met in Whittier, California, and established a Bible college geared to training students for service and missionary endeavors. This was the first Bible college founded on the West Coast. The first class of students met on March 3, 1900, with Mary A. Hill serving as the first principal. The school moved three times in its first seven years, settling in Huntington Park in 1907. The school maintained the name of the Training School for Christian Workers until 1939, when it was changed to Pacific Bible College and four-year degrees were offered. Also in 1939, Cornelius P. Haggard, Ph.D., was appointed president, serving for 36 years, until his death in 1975.
By the mid 1940s, Pacific Bible College quickly outgrew its Huntington Park campus. After much consideration, the Board of Trustees decided in late 1945 to purchase the 12-acre Maybelle Scott Rancho School for Girls in Azusa. Classes began on the new campus in 1947, and in 1956, the college's name was changed to Azusa College.
Azusa College merged in 1965 with Los Angeles Pacific College, a four-year liberal arts institution founded in 1903 by the Free Methodist Church. The college was then renamed Azusa Pacific College. Three years later, in 1968, Azusa Pacific College merged with Arlington College, founded in 1954 by the Association of Churches of God in Southern California.
Bethany College was founded in 1919 as the training school for Glad Tidings Temple, an inner-city ministry conducted by Robert and Mary Craig in San Francisco. The school was moved to its present site in the Santa Cruz mountains in 1950 and became a four-year degree granting college in 1955. Bethany received accreditation with the American Association of Bible Colleges in 1959 and regional accreditation with the Western Association of Schools and Colleges in 1966. Since 1968, Bethany's teacher preparation program has been recognized by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing of the State of California.
Bethany has the distinction of being the oldest accredited Assemblies of God college in the world. Because of its heritage and the continuing need for effective Pentecostal leadership, the College is committed to providing the finest environment for the spiritual, academic, and professional development of its students.

The Seventh-day Adventist Church has a heritage of strong commitment to education. Its members expressed this commitment during the late 1800's and early 1900's by establishing schools and colleges near major population centers across North America. In 1874 the Church founded its first college in Battle Creek, Michigan. A few years later, the rapidly growing California church began looking for a good location for a school in Northern California.
Fifteen miles north of Santa Rosa, in the vineyards of Healdsburg, the searchers found ideal property. For thirty gold coins, they purchased an imposing, fully furnished brick structure, just off Healdsburg's main street. The new school opened April 11, 1882, with two teachers and twenty-six students. In 1899, to reflect more accurately the school's purpose and expanding curriculum, the school's name was changed to Healdsburg College. In 1906 it became Pacific Union College.
When the Angwin Resort, in the mountains above St. Helena, became available a few years later, the College Board sensed the opportunity to secure more adequate space for the rapidly growing school. They bought the land and its buildings for $60,000.
Pacific Union College was dedicated at its present Angwin site on September 29, 1909. The resort's hotel, bowling alleys, and cottages became dormitories, classrooms, and faculty homes. Students and faculty worked together building other structures, often using lumber harvested from the College property.

From two graduates in 1973 to a current alumni base of 3,000, CHC students are making a difference around the world. In 1973, CHC moved from church facilities in downtown San Diego to the present 32-acre campus in the foothill community of El Cajon. Early years were characterized by rapidly expanding enrollments and development of new academic programs. Today, courses from fifteen academic disciplines are offered. A change from a modular to semester program made it possible to add extracurricular and intercollegiate programs. During this time CHC was awarded accreditation by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and Transnational Association of Colleges and Schools (TRACS). From an original faculty and staff of fewer than ten, CHC faculty and staff is now close to ninety including full-time and part-time employees. Simpson College was founded in 1921 as Simpson Bible Institute by W.W. Newberry, who served as its first president. Established in Seattle, Washington, the school was named in honor of Albert Benjamin Simpson, a Presbyterian minister who pioneered the Bible institute movement during the late nineteenth century and founded The Christian and Missionary Alliance. Initially offering a three-year program of study, the school was designed to promote spiritual growth and prepare students for Christian life and service, especially overseas. In 1955, the school moved to San Francisco, and its name was changed to Simpson Bible College since it was now granting bachelor degrees. Over the years, the college continued to broaden its academic offerings so that by the time the half-century mark was reached in 1971, it had become a more comprehensive liberal arts college offering professional as well as biblical studies. That same year, the name was changed to Simpson College.
Another historic milestone was passed in 1989 when Simpson relocated to its current location in Redding and began building a brand new campus, which is still a work in progress. Since the move, undergraduate enrollment has more than doubled. The graduate school has been established, and the ASPIRE program (degree completion) has been added.
