The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is a small, private, research-oriented university located on a 124-acre campus in Pasadena, California.

Caltech is home to some 1800 students, over half of which are graduate students and post-graduate fellows. The faculty numbers almost 300 professors, and about 500 research members. Caltech faculty and graduates are highly regarded in their fields; 26 Nobel prizes have been awarded to Caltech faculty and alumni. As an institution, Caltech is highly regarded, consistently ranking in the top 10 in the U.S. News & World Report rankings (and First in 1999).

Caltech maintains strong programs in many areas of cutting-edge scientific interest, with a strong culture of interdisciplinary research and commercial start-ups.

Departments and Programs

Caltech is home to six academic divisions:

Biology

Chemistry & Chemical Engineering

Engineering & Applied Science

Geological & Planetary Sciences

Humanities & Social Sciences

Physics, Mathematics & Astronomy

However, interdisciplinary research has a strong tradition at Caltech. Institutions such as Beckman Institute, the Computation and Neural Systems program, the Biochemistry program, and many others continue to demonstrate this.
