Type of B-cell lymphoma first described by Dennis Burkitt who was working in Africa at the time. The disease was common to the children of that region. Research later showed that these children had been infected with the Epstein-Barr virus. Because these children had lowered immune systems to begin with in some cases the virus they were infected with changed the B-lymphocytes into cancerous cells.
