The second game in the series, Phantasy Star II picks up where Phantasy Star left off, but nearly 1000 years later. The setting has gone from a combination of science fiction and fantasy to almost completely science fiction. The subtle suggestions of a society gone very wrong helped to make the game a hit. Since its original Genesis/MegaDrive release, Phantasy Star II has often been released on other platforms, including the Sega Saturn, Game Boy Advance (as part of Phantasy Star Collection in both cases), a downloadable online game (via the Sega Channel and RealArcade), PC, and Dreamcast (as part of the Sega Smash Pack in the latter two cases). It was also revamped and released in Japan for the Sony PlayStation 2 as "Phantasy Star Generation 2."
