1   Q: Which sub-category should I use?
A: Sites which offer online shopping for a large number of hardware products from a number of different vendors may be included in Computers:Hardware:Retailers. Software-only sites should be submitted to Computers:Software:Retailers. If the site sells both hardware and software, submit to just the "Hardware" area.

Note that if the site appears elsewhere on the ODP, it will probably not be duplicated here unless a compelling reason is given. Please only submit a suggestion if sales of computers are a significant presence on the site.

Sites offering specific advice and information on computers, such as buying guides, price comparisons, and reviews should go to Home: Consumer Information: Reviews: Price Comparisons.

Extremely general information about shopping for computers should go in the main Computers:Shopping category.

Companies which offer information on products they manufacture should be submitted to an appropriate Business category.

2   Q: Why didn't you accept the site I submitted?
A: Generally, we need to be convinced that the site is in some way better than the rest of the sites out there. The easiest way to impress us is to have a fast, clean, easy-to-navigate site which primarily relates to computer sales.

If your site already exists somewhere else on the directory, it probably won't be re-listed.

If the site description is excessively long, we will not accept it. This is a human-edited directory and we do not include extraneous words on the hopes of getting extra "hits" from the search engine. Feel free to use other directories for such things.

We also edit site descriptions for length and content. Feel free to leave feedback with suggestions for improvements, but we reserve final judgement for what is included.

3   Q: My site is an associate/affiliate of a large, centrally-managed site. Should I list it here?
A: No. We would appreciate hearing about the centrally-managed site, though.

The goal of the ODP is to index content. Creating multiple pointers back to the same content does not offer any real value to the users of the ODP.

If your site offers significant original content in addition to an affiliation, please be sure to explicitly point out the original content when submitting your site.

4   Q: What if I want to give the editors more information?
A: Feel free to leave us comments in [square brackets]. We'll get the hint and remove them before publishing the description.

Editor feedback is also a good way to get hold of us.

5   Examples of Categorization
5.1   Q: I found a site that sells a lot of different brands, but all the orders are placed through a single company. Where does this go?
A: Since the money all flows to a single company, submit it to Computers:Hardware:Retailers or it it only sells software, to Computers:Software:Retailers.

5.2   Q: What if all the products on the site are all made by the same company?
A: This should be categorized based on the role of the manufacturer. Try looking for an appropriate category under either the Business: or Computers: headings.

5.3   Q: I found a site that goes out on the web and looks for the best prices from a number of companies? Where does this go?
A: Since the money could go to any of a number of companies, this would go into the Home: Consumer Information: Reviews: Price Comparisons category.

5.4   Q: I found a site that sells a lot of software and books, but no hardware. Where should this go?
A: This is best suited for Computers:Software:Retailers.

5.5   Q: There is a great site for information on (some component). Where should this go?
A: Since this relates to only one particular product, rather than shopping in general, try to categorize it by the nature of the part. For example, video cards have their own category in Computers:Hardware:Components.

6   Q: Where should I submit non-English sites?
A: Non-English sites should be submitted to the appropriate World/ subcategory. See also the links "This category in other languages" on the category page.
