1   Licensees Use of the Data
1.1   Q: How do other sites utilize the Open Directory Project data?
A: Many Internet search services use the Open Directory Data under the terms of the Open Directory Free Use License. The Open Directory benefits from the links back to it to submit a site or become an editor.

1.2   Q: When will the site I submitted to the ODP show up on one of these other search services?
A: There are actually two questions here.
  1. First, sites submitted to the Open Directory will take time to be reviewed, and accepted or rejected. Waiting times vary between categories.

  2. Second, it is usually a multiweek project for the licensees to download a copy of the ODP and host it on their own site. The ODP has no control over this.

1.3   Q: Do licensees have to update their version of the ODP?
A: Nothing in the free use license requires the licensee to update their version of the ODP.

1.4   Q: My web site appears on dmoz.org, but I can't seem to find it on my favorite search service, which uses the ODP. What do I do?
A: It's very likely that the search service in question has not updated their version of the ODP data. There is nothing that can be done at dmoz.org to change this.

1.5   Q: How often is the ODP data updated for the licensees' use?
A: The ODP RDF dump is usually generated once per week and usually published on Wednesday or Thursday.

1.6   Q: Why doesn't the ODP require licensees to update the data on a regular basis?
A: The free use license has been critical to the success and widespread acceptance of the ODP. Changing it would be very difficult at this point, and dictating terms to the licensees on this point would likely be difficult to enforce, as well as being counter to the spirit of the free use license.
