Please submit under Computers: Internet: On the Web: Best of the Web: Site Awards: Rated Awards if your program displays an award rating from one of the internationally acknowledged services.

Welcome to the mutual back-slapping society of the Web. There's a dizzying variety of awards here; content awards, graphics awards, awards for service to specific interest groups, awards for awards--even one that gives awards only to awards with "cool" in their names. Even our editors have gotten into the act with their ability to "cool" directory sites.

Each award has many sides to it. Users simply want to know if award site's winners list will have links worth visiting (surfers, please also visit related categories listed here). Webmasters want to know if an award is something to be proud of, if it's achievable for them, and if it will bring them more visitors. Award site owners want to increase their own status, traffic, and traffic to their sponsors, if any.

Webmasters have many ways of approaching the submission process. There are automated services and software for the faint of heart and short of time, but the best way is to examine the awards (and a sampling of their winners) in detail, see if they meet your needs, and prepare a submission specifically for each award you desire. Don't chicken out on submitting for very selective awards; you can learn a lot by checklisting your site against their requirements, and you will also improve your submission skills. You will likely find that certain guides to awards are essential to making your time count.

Whether you're a user or a webmaster, happy hunting!

Rated Awards

Please submit only sites that have been rated by one or more of the internationally acknowledged rating services. Non-rated award programs should be submitted under Computers: Internet: On the Web: Best of the Web: Site Awards

Be sure to include your current rating and the organization from which it was obtained.
Rated award programs represent a global effort to improve the standards of judging quality on the Web. These programs have undergone significant scrutiny themselves by various organizations to earn the ratings they hold. Each rating organization maintains a unique set of criteria and rating designation, usually numeric. Award-givers voluntarily subject their awards to this scrutiny and must display the rating in a prominent location on their site.

Generally speaking, the higher rated programs are more difficult to win. However most have established a standard scoring and judging system by which all sites are evaluated equally. A Code of Ethics declaration may also be present to warrant a fair evaluation.

These programs are not for the casual award hunter. Requirements are strict and the application process is often arduous, many requiring verification that the rules have been read. They also may offer a self-evaluation area to help predict your success based on the guidelines.

In the final analysis, rated awards endeavor to improve the Web experience by rewarding excellence. A quick trip to the winners' list and a careful read of the criteria might reveal you have a winning site of your own.
