1   Q: What should go here?
A: This is a fairly general section for retailers of computer hardware, or retailers which sell software and hardware. There is a definite bias towards PC hardware due to the prevalence of custom-configured PC systems.

Non-x86 UNIX hardware is found in Computers:Hardware:Systems

There is a special category for Macintosh-only retailers.

2   Q: What about software sites?
A: If the site sells a wide variety of software packages from a number of different manufacturers, then they should be listed in Computers:Software:Retailers. If they sell hardware and software, then this is the best place.

If this is a site for the manufacturer of software, it should be categorized based on the type of software and services provided. Try looking through Computers or Companies to find a speciality which fits the site well.

3   Q: I found a site that sells a lot of computer-related stuff, but not any complete computers. Where should that go?
A: Sites selling disks, toner, paper, and other similar products should be submitted to an Office Products category. They should be listed in related categories.

4   Q: I found a site that sells a very specific bit of hardware, where should that go?
A: There are categories scattered around the Open Directory for specific parts like this. Check Computers:Hardware:Peripherals for starters. If nothing there looks good, try a couple of searches and see what you can come up with.

If nothing looks good, try asking the editors for advice on a good location.

5   Q: Why didn't you accept the site I submitted?
A: Generally, we need to be convinced that the site is in some way better than the rest of the sites out there. The easiest way to impress us is to have a fast, clean, easy-to-navigate site which primarily relates to computer sales.

If your site already exists somewhere else on the directory, it probably won't be re-listed.

Sites which are incomplete, having Under Construction notices, or which contain broken graphics or links have a poor chance of being listed. Please wait to submit your web site until it is complete. Please double-check the URL, and, if possible, include an e-mail address so we may contact you if we have questions.

If the site description is excessively long, we will not accept it. This is a human-edited directory and we do not include extraneous words on the hopes of getting extra "hits" from the search engine. Feel free to use other directories for such things.

Maybe we thought that it was better suited in another category. Try searching the directory before abandoning all hope.

We also edit site descriptions for length and content. Feel free to leave feedback with suggestions for improvements, but we reserve final judgement for what is included.

6   Q: My site is an associate/affiliate of a large, centrally-managed site. Should I list it here?
A: No. We would appreciate hearing about the centrally-managed site, though.

The goal of the Open Directory is to index content. Creating multiple pointers back to the same content does not offer any real value to the users of the Open Directory.

If your site offers significant original content in addition to an affiliation, please be sure to explicitly point out the original content when submitting your site.

7   Q: What if I want to give the editors more information?
A: Feel free to leave us comments in [square brackets]. We'll get the hint and remove them before publishing the description.

Editor feedback is also a good way to get hold of us.

8   Q: All these sites seem to be English-language only? Where should I submit non-English sites?
A: All non-English sites should be submitted under the appropriate World category.
