A modem is a device consisting of a modulator and a demodulator. It converts a digital signal into an analog signal which is modulation and reversing this is demodulation.For example, a modem allows a user to download Web pages using an Internet browser and a connection to the Internet.

A 56K modem is a modem that has download speeds of up to 56Kbps, with current law mandates of around 53K download or downstream and 33.6Kbps upstream. The 56K or V.90 ITU standard is now being surpassed by faster hardware devices using broadband technology called Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) and Cable Modem.
