E-Ink stands for electronic ink, a type of display device with dramatic benefits over traditional media:

1) Reflective: emits no light, for low power use. 2) Non-volatile: uses no power except to change image; when power is off, the image remains. 3) Low power use: reflective and non-volatile. 4) Low mass: very thin with low density materials. 5) Size range: tiny to several meters across, all tested in public. 6) Flexible physically: can bend somewhat without breaking. 7) Low cost: made of inexpensive materials, with no light emitters.

Operating principle: uses reusable 'paper' and magnetic or electrically charged 'ink' (bichromal beads) to display information. Electronic paper can be magnetized to show changing content, and then re-written for the next use.

Possible uses: Computer displays, changeable signs for public information or advertising, active camouflage for military systems.
