1   Q: What is the nature of this category?
A: This category is an attempt to serve the textiles and nonwovens industries by gathering and listing, not only as many web sites from manufacturers of raw materials, machinery and products as we possibly can, but also information and education resources, research institutes, laboratoies, consultants and the large variety of supporting industries providing indispensable design, production and marketing services.

In doing so, we aim at providing both industries with a comprehensive business and information resource.

Since both, textile and nonwoven fabrics and products are being utilized by the geotechnical industry, a separate sub-category is available for those companies which produce or incorporate these products in their manufacturing, fabrication or installation processes.

The leather tanning and processing industry is also part of this category, partly because much of the chemicals and dyestuffs used in the textile and nonwovens industries are being utilised by the leather industry as well, partly because this category is a better place for it than some general materials category in Industrial Goods.

2   Q: Why are the textile and nonwovens industries not categorised separately?
A: The textiles and nonwovens industries in many ways utilize the same basic raw materials, which are fibers and chemicals.

Up to a point, the machinery in use in both industries is essentially the same, and are designed and manufactured by the same companies.

Most companies that provide coating, laminating, finishing and converting services to the textile industry, do that for the nonwovens industry as well.

It is mostly a matter of convenience to have all these resources listed in one combined category, where people from both industries can easily find them.

3   Q: What's the main difference between a textile and a nonwoven product?
A: Textiles are either woven or knitted, and one needs a yarn to manufacture either one of them. For the textile industry, yarns constitute its main raw material.

The nonwovens industry works with natural and man-made fibers, without the need to first spin yarns from them. Fibers are consolidated directly into fabrics or formed products through the use of one or a combination of several web forming technologies, none of which involve weaving or knitting.

4   Q: How do I know where to submit my site?
A: Well, preferably not on this page since this is no more than an entry page to the category. Then it depends on what the site is about.

The sub-categories for textile and nonwovens products are fairly detailed. Browse through them. There should be no difficulty with finding a category that suits the content of the site.

If the site is designed for e-commerce only, strictly related to textiles and/or nonwovens, submit at /Internet Trading.

Please, do NOT submit at /Resources, unless the site is a portal, business directory or publication, or is informational or educational in essence.

5   Q: We are distributors, wholesalers, agents, representatives, importers, exporters - anything but manufacturers. Where do we go?
A: You're at the right place. Every main category in Textiles and Nonwovens has its Wholesale and Distribution, and Import and Export sub-categories.

Please, do NOT submit shopping sites to Textiles and Nonwovens. They will not be listed here.

Shopping/Clothing and its sub-categories will be happy to receive all garment and accessories shopping sites.

Shopping/Home_and_Garden and its sub-categories are designed for all textile fabrics, carpets, furnishings and upholstery shopping sites.

6   Q: Are there any requirements of a site in order to be suitable for a listing?
A: Not many, but there are. After all, this is a directory which aims to provide valuable information to its users, not a phone book or business card holder. That means that sites which do not include more than an e-mail contact on one page will not be listed. Submissions of affiliate and redirecting sites will be deleted, as will any site that doesn't allow the use of a browsers' back button to leave the site. Sites which generate an excessive number of pop-ups will also not be included in this category.

Individual pages from other web or business directories also will not be accepted here, unless they carry information not otherwise available elsewhere in this category. Business directories, by the way, have their very own category, where they are listed only with the parent URL.

At the very least, web sites should include product and sufficient contact information to be considered for a listing.

7   Q: Can a site be listed under the title of a brand name?
A: The short answer is, no.

Throughout the entire Business/ tree, sites get listed with the name of the company as title only. This is to prevent giving unfair marketing advantages to a particular company, and to prevent listing a site more than once when this is unnecessary.

Having said that, it is possible to have more than one page of a site listed if that is judged appropriate with regard to the content of the various pages, but the title of the listing will be the company name as provided on the site. It follows from the above that a site which doesn't provide a proper company name anywhere on its pages, will not be listed.

8   Q: What about a site that is "Under Construction"?
A: That really depends on how much of it is available to the viewer. Many sites are under perpetual construction, and still are valuable contributions to the directory.

When most of the links on the site aren't active yet, then you should perhaps reconsider and wait with submitting it. We strive to provide our viewers with active web sites, containing the information they are looking for. That should be your interest as well.

9   Q: So, what do I do if my site isn't finished yet?
A: There are two options here. The first is to keep it warm, and submit when it's ready to be published. The second is, to submit the site to the entry page for /Textiles and Nonwovens, and not expect it to be listed untill it is in working order. That should be a site's front page at the very least. Domain registration announcements will be deleted.

We will keep the URL for the unfinished site stored in our files, and check on it from time to time. By the time the dust, scaffolds and tools have all disappeared, either submit again or send us a note through the feedback option.

10   Q: Can I submit sites, which I believe are suitable for Textiles and Nonwovens, but aren't mine?
A: By all means! In fact, if you are knowledgable in textiles or nonwovens, and sitting on a stack of URLs which would add valuable content to this category, you can do two things. One is to submit them to the proper sub-categories. The other is, clicking the "Become and Editor" button at the top of each page, and add them yourself. We can certainly use more industry professionals in here! :-)

11   Q: How long does it take for a site to be listed?
A: That depends. We are volunteers here. We do this editing work for a hobby, and in as much of the available spare time we decide to spend on it. Sometimes it'll only take a few days. At other times it could be a few weeks. Bread needs to be brought onto our tables, parents-in-law require to be visited, and kids need to be helped out of the house, either to school or to their wedding.

The one promise we can make in regard to a site is, that once submitted it will be reviewed as soon as we possibly can.

12   Q: My site is listed, but I want the URL and/or the description changed. How do I go about getting that done?
A: The most effective way to draw the attention of an editor to your site is to re-submit it to the category it's listed in, adding the reason to the submit form.

No automatic re-write of a description should be expected though. We describe what we see on the pages of a site, and are required to do that in proper English. Keyword stuffing is not accepted. However, a properly written description will probably include many of the keywords you're interested in. Since ODP's search engine scans the category name, as well as the site titles and their descriptions, your site will be found by anyone knowing what to look for.

13   Q: My site isn't accompanied by English language pages.
A: Than you should submit it to the proper language category in World. Non-English sites aren't listed here.

14   Q: Can I have more than one page listed?
A: No, unless the site covers a number of generically different topics, we do not list sites twice. For more information, see the answer to Q#7 above.

15   Q: Is there an easy way of searching for the information I need?
A: There are a number of ways you can use to retrieve the information you're looking for. 1. Scope. It is possible to search the entire ODP directory, or by selecting from the drop-down menu at the top of each page, you can restrict it to the page you're at. 2. Materials. Virtually all descriptions include a mentioning of the main materials products are made from. Search for cotton, and the results will turn up every site where in the description the word cotton is used. 3. Product. All descriptions include a mentioning of the main types of products companies make or sell. Search for needlepunch, and every company that either makes, incorporates or sells nonwoven needlepunch fabrics will turn up. 4. Company. All listed sites carry the name of the company. If you know the name of the company but don't know the category it is listed in, type in the company's name. 5. Country. Wherever possible a mentioning of the country a company's headquarters are located in, is added to the descriptions. Be aware that by using country search, the returns will include all sites, related to what you're looking for AND unrelated, which carry that country prefix in the descriptions, unless you first select the right category after a product search. 6. Continent. Whenever a page is growing too long, which in most cases will be at around 150 sites, we sub-categorise first by continent, and later on by country if needed.
