Please submit only sites relating to environmentally sensitive construction and design of buildings, products, technologies, and design strategies. Sites dealing with development should be submitted to Society: Issues: Environment: Sustainable Development. Sites that sell services and products should check Business: Industries: Construction and Maintenance: Materials and Supplies first before submitting here.
From the description of the Sustainable Development category:

The World Commission on Environment and Development (the Brundtland Commission), defined "sustainable development" as follows in the report Our Common Future (Oxford : Oxford University Press, 1987): "Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts: the concept of "needs", in particular the essential needs of the world's poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment's ability to meet present and future needs."

Sustainable architecture is design and construction that supports these goals. Also known as green architecture or environmentally sensitive architecture. Through the use of building technologies, design strategies, and materials it seeks to minimize the impact we have on the environment.

Earth Construction

Earth Construction Description - Any building technology using earth as the dominate material, including: Adobe, Clay & Cob, Rammed Earth, Underground and Earth Shelters, Earth Blocks, Earth Bags, Papercrete, and Earthen Floors.

From the beginning of recorded history earth has been the most widely used building material in the world. Because of its low cost, ease of construction, and control over temperature extremes, earth architecture long ago set the standard for comfort and efficiency.

Beautiful, energy efficient, environmentally friendly, safe, durable and economic.

Please submit sites that only deal specifically with Earthship construction and use.

"The Earthship is a completely independent globally oriented dwelling unit made from materials that are indigenous to the entire planet. The major structural building component of the Earthship is recycled automobile tires filled with compacted earth to form a rammed earth brick encased in steel belted rubber. This brick and the resulting bearing walls it forms is virtually indestructible." from the Earthship Biotecture site

Green Roofs

Green roofs, also known as eco roofs and nature roofs, are vegetated roof coverings consisting of living vegetation on top of a modified conventional roof system.

Extensive systems are similar in weight to conventional gravel roofs and can be installed on any roofing deck, flat or sloped up to 45 degrees. Heavier intensive systems, which can include landscape planters and walkways, are intended for flat roofs with additional structural support.

The sod roofs and walls of buildings in Iceland provided the inspiration for the green roof concept. The technology emerged in Germany over 30 years ago and is in widespread use across Europe.

Organizations

Please submit only sites of groups and organizations. Consulting firms should go to Consultants. General resource sites should be in the main category.
Groups, associations, and organizations that promote, research, and provide resources for sustainable architecture.

Straw Bale Construction

Professional Straw Bale builders and associations, plans, and resources.

DEFINITION (Sustainable Building Sourcebook): Straw bale construction uses baled straw from wheat, oats, barley, rye, rice and others in walls covered by stucco. Straw bales are traditionally a waste product which farmers do not till under the soil, but do sell as animal bedding or landscape supply due to their durable nature. In many areas, it is also burned, causing severe air quality problems.

Straw is the dry plant material or stalk left in the field after a plant has matured, been harvested for seed, and is no longer alive. Hay bales are made from short species of livestock feed grass that is green/alive and are not suitable for this application. Hay is also typically twice the price of straw.

Modern day yurts typically have vinyl windows, a skylight and are made of vinyl or fabric. They have recently become popular in Western countries as permanent full time houses, weekend/vacation getaways and camping cabins. Modern day yurts are also typically built on decks and may have utilities (water, electric).
