1   Q: We do business in many localities. Can my business be listed by service area?
A: The rule of thumb is that most businesses are listed at the locality where they are based. There is no hard and fast rule about which sites may be listed by service area, but editors may always make exceptions where it makes sense. Certain types of "come to you" businesses may be listed by service area, as specified either in words or by a map.

2   Q: What types of businesses may be considered for listing by service area?
A: A few types of onsite service providers are accepted by most editors. These include bands and disc jockeys, newspapers and magazines (but only those with specific regional focus), gas and electric utilities, radio and television stations, and limousine services.

3   Q: What about Internet Service Providers?
A: Some editors list ISPs by service area, but others list them at their base locality.

4   Q: How about general contractors?
A: Although the construction trades "come to you," there is strong resistance to listing them anywhere but at their base locality.

5   Q: What about home health aides?
A: Many editors will list sites such as home visiting nurse agencies at the county, metro, or region level, according to the apparent area served.

6   Q: A competitor is listed at county level but doesn't fit any of these categories. What's going on?
A: Companies with multiple offices or locations are listed at the lowest level containing all of their locations. A company with branches in three different localities within a county will be listed at the county level. A firm with offices spread over several counties may require listing at metro or state level. Ironically, large national or global corporations are generally listed at the locality matching their corporate headquarters.

7   Q: Any other exceptions to locality listing to know about?
A: Clubs and associations are usually listed at the level matching the area from which their members are drawn, rather than their headquarters locality. Government agencies are listed at the area they cover (state rather than state capital, for example), as are scientific and environmental agencies and commissions.
