Pendleton County is the fifth largest and second most sparsely populated county in West Virginia. Agriculture, timbering and tourism are the major economic activities. The county's eastern, western and southern boundaries mark the headwaters of the South Branch of the Potomac River. The forested mountains and pastoral valleys sculpted by these streams make Pendleton County the scenic jewel of the Potomac Highlands.
