These are some sites I plan to put elsewhere in the ODP, and a few just as useful personal bookmarks.
The field of mathematical programming or optimization seeks to minimize or maximize a function in several variables, subject to constraints on those variables.Note that the word "programming" does not refer to computer programming. Indeed, mathematical programming has been around well before computer programming was a common term.
Rithmomachia is an old and complex board game that goes back to at least 1030 AD (medieval times). The moves are vaguely Chess-like, but each piece is labeled with a number, and both captures and winning positions are based on arithmetic (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division) and progressions (arithmetic, geometric, and harmonic). The game is also known as the Philosophers' Game (primarily in England) and as the Battle of Numbers (a rough translation of Rithmomachia). It also has had several spellings over the years, including Rithmomachia (the most common today), Rythmomachia, RithmimachiaThis category includes sites that cover the history of the game (including the meaning of the name Rithmomachia), the rules of the game, and implementations of the game.
