Transportation Asset Management

Asset management, as defined by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, is "a systematic process of maintaining, upgrading and operating physical assets cost-effectively."

Infrastructure Asset Engineering and Management is concerned with the creation, renewal, refurbishment, management and disposal of infrastructure assets over time. In short, the engineering and management of their whole life performance. Infrastructure assets can take many forms. They can be those normally associated with the 'heavy civil engineering' sector, for example, roads, railways, airports, flood defences, ports and harbours, water treatment plants, power plants. Equally, they can be those normally associated with the 'building' sector, for example, schools, healthcare facilities, retail and industrial outlets, housing developments, and different types of government buildings. The management and engineering of infrastructure assets and their performance over time is important for! countries in the developed and developing world.
