Appalachian

Appalachian fiddling developed in the southern Appalachian mountains - from traditional Scottish, English and Irish music brought to the United States by immigrants from those countries.

In turn it influenced country, bluegrass, and old-time music.

New England

One of the oldest "Old-Time" traditions in America, now a mix of Irish, Scottish and English fiddle techniques, and closely associated with contradancing.

Western

A group of regional variations with close links into jazz and bluegrass. Includes the "Western swing" popularised by Bob Wills.

The National Oldtime Fiddlers' Contest is held annually in Weiser, Idaho.
