The Clavichord is a small keyboard instrument popular for domestic use up to the late 18th century. It has undergone a revival in the late 20th century and many instruments are currently built based on historic instruments and practices. The sound is produced when a metal tangent on the back of the key strikes the string. Unlike the piano, which has a complex hammer mechanism, the tangent remains in contact with the string while the note sounds. Clavichords have a soft tone but allow variation in loud and soft unlike a harpsichord.
| No modern piano sites please! Submit sites with significant content relating to the fortepiano, defined for this classification as prior t0 the 20th century. Where other types of early keyboard are also involved, submit to Top:Arts:Music:Instruments:Keyboard: Early_Keyboard. Sites predominantly about modern pianos should be submitted to the appropriate category in Top:Arts:Music:Instruments:Keyboard:Piano |
Fortepiano is the term that is commonly applied to pianos built in an earlier period or style than the 20th Century instrument. They have a different tone and expressivity to the modern instrument. There were two main schools of mechanism: Viennese and English. The English was the precursor of the modern piano.
