American composer Robert Erickson (1917-1997) was among the first of his compatriots to embrace twelve-tone composition. Following modernist ideas throughout his career, he later evolved into a minimalist. He composed in almost every genre except opera. He co-founded the music department at the University of California, San Diego.

Erickson tutored a number of noted composers, including Paul Dresher, Pauline Oliveros, Terry Riley, Loren Rush, Charles Shere, and Morton Subotnick.
