A Nottingham factory worker (Albert Finney) is dissatisfied with his lot, gets into trouble through an affair with a married woman (Rachel Roberts), his best friend's wife, but finally settles down.

Also stars Shirley Anne Field, Hylda Baker and Norman Rossington.
