Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890) was one of Europe's greatest painters. In the late 19th century he created hundreds of magnificent works of art but only sold one painting during his life.Vincent was found wounded in bed on July 27 1890 after he tried to take his life. When his brother Theo tried to persuade him that he would be healed, Vincent answered: "La tristesse durera toujours." (Sadness shall last forever) Vincent died the next night, July 29, at half past one.

The paintings of John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) are well known and utterly distinctive. He was inspired to take up landscape painting by another Leeds artist, John Inchbold, and his early works are painted in the Pre-Raphaelite landscape style. He produced several very fine works, including some of the Lake District and Yorkshire.He is now best known for his dock scenes and moonlit landscapes. Despite the vast quantity of paintings and drawings produced, only a few are in public museums and galleries, the majority being in private collections, and rarely seen. Leeds City Art Gallery has a good collection of his work.
